Exercise
Stay independent through exercise!
Breathe deep, roll your shoulders, lift your arms over your head, tap your feet on the floor, scratch your back, or march in place. If it sounds like exercise, it is, but it's an exercise program that is geared to the elderly.
Exercise is important for people of all ages. But, for seniors it is especially important to keep mobile because it will help prolong your life. An Activity Guide for Older Adults outlines how 30 minutes of exercise a day will lead to better physical and mental health. Studies also show exercise will help prevent people from falling in later life.
Exercise classes are held five days a week. Residents move their arms and legs and bend their joints to help strengthen their muscles and keep them agile. The exercise class is done in the lounge area. Residents sit in chairs while they do the different routines. Others watch and listen to the music. Those exercising have fun and chat amongst themselves during the class. It is a very relaxed atmosphere. One that makes Algonquin - A Place Called Home.
