Short Term Care
Respite Care
The Algonquin Nursing Home offers respite care for the elderly. It is a service which provides twenty four hour quality care for your loved one. A person can stay for up to 90 days a year at the ANH in the respite care program.
The respite program gives the regular caregiver a break from looking after a loved one, or family member. For example if the caregiver wanted to have a few days off from looking after their loved one they could leave their family member at the nursing home. Or if they wanted to go away on a holiday, the nursing home would provide care while they were gone. This can be done several times a year. Or if a loved one needed extra care for a short period of time the person could stay at the nursing home.

Family Enjoys Respite Care
In 1998, a local resident of Mattawa Roger Belanger had just returned home after spending two months in the nursing home. He broke his hip in the fall and spent two weeks in the hospital in North Bay and two weeks at the Mattawa General. When it came time for him to be released Mrs. Belanger felt she couldn’t look after him at home. His doctor Dr. Redhead suggested that he go the Nursing Home to recover.
The Belangers were very pleased with the care Roger received at the Nursing Home. There was always someone to look after him, and help him with his exercises every other day. They both found the atmosphere at the home very cheery and bright. Mr. Belanger enjoyed the activities that were organized for the patients. There was always something for him to do.
Respite care is booked through the Placement Coordination Service of the Near North Community Care Access Centre. A portion of the cost is covered through health insurance. Lori Ann Belanger, the Placement Service Person at Algonquin Nursing Home can also provide more information on the program and assist anyone interested in it.
